The ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) v4.0 exam is a closed book, 60 minute exam with 40 multiple choice questions. You need 26 correct answers, or 65%, to pass. There are no prerequisites, and preparation usually involves working through the six syllabus chapters before practising exam style questions.

The ISTQB Foundation exam at a glance

The ISTQB Foundation exam tests your understanding of core software testing principles and your ability to apply them in context. The current CTFL v4.0 format is:

Questions 40 multiple choice
Exam time 60 minutes
Pass mark 65% (26/40)
Format Closed book
Prerequisites None

The qualification is suitable for people starting a testing career, but it is also relevant to developers and other professionals who work closely with software quality.

What the CTFL v4.0 syllabus covers

The ISTQB Foundation level exam draws questions from six syllabus chapters:

  1. Fundamentals of testing: why testing matters, its underlying principles and the activities involved.
  2. Testing throughout the software development lifecycle: how testing relates to development approaches, test levels and maintenance.
  3. Static testing: techniques for finding defects without executing software, including reviews.
  4. Test analysis and design: black box and white box techniques, alongside experience based approaches.
  5. Managing the test activities: planning, risk management and activities such as defect management.
  6. Test tools: their purpose and the opportunities or risks associated with their use.

Give Chapter 4 particular attention. The current official exam structure allocates 11 questions to test analysis and design, more than any other chapter. Chapter 5 accounts for another nine, so simply giving every chapter the same amount of revision time is unlikely to be the most effective approach.

How to prepare: a four week study plan

How long you need to spend preparing for the ISTQB Foundation exam depends on your existing testing knowledge. CTFL is designed as an entry point with no prerequisites, and a four week plan provides enough structure for beginners to cover the syllabus without leaving practice until the final few days.

Week Focus
1 Study Chapters 1 and 2, building confidence with core terminology and lifecycle concepts.
2 Cover Chapter 3 and begin Chapter 4. Spend time applying the test techniques rather than memorising definitions.
3 Complete Chapters 4, 5 and 6. Revisit weaker areas and start timed practice questions.
4 Revise across the syllabus and complete mock exams under exam conditions. Review incorrect answers to identify remaining gaps.

Candidates taking TSG's classroom or live virtual CTFL course should also allow approximately four to five hours for pre reading before the course begins.

Practice matters because the exam includes questions that test application as well as recall. The free ISTQB Foundation practice questions are useful for checking your progress once you have covered the syllabus. Self study offers the most flexibility, but live virtual or classroom training provides a more structured route through the syllabus. Live virtual training suits learners who want trainer support without travelling, whereas classroom training may work better for those who prefer learning face to face.

What to expect on exam day

The current TSG course provides the ISTQB Foundation exam online via remote proctoring.

Sixty minutes for 40 questions gives you an average of 90 seconds per question, but some will take much less time. Read every option before selecting an answer. If a question is taking too long, flag it and return once you have worked through the rest of the paper.

Is the ISTQB Foundation exam hard? It requires proper preparation, particularly because some questions ask you to apply your knowledge rather than repeat a definition. However, the syllabus and exam structure are clearly defined, making a structured approach to revision effective.

ISTQB Foundation exam fees and booking in the UK

ISTQB exam fees vary according to how you prepare and book, so check the current course information rather than relying on a figure that may not be valid for long.

TSG's CTFL training options include the certification exam as part of the package. The course also includes accredited training and guidance from an experienced trainer. Pass Protect exam insurance is available as an optional extra.

If you are comparing a course with booking an exam separately, look at what the total price includes rather than the exam fee alone. Training and preparation materials affect the overall value of each option. If your budget is tight, start with the free official ISTQB syllabus and sample exams, alongside TSG’s free ISTQB Foundation practice questions. These provide a useful foundation for self study before deciding whether you need additional training.

After you pass: next steps

CTFL provides a recognised foundation in software testing and is a prerequisite for many of ISTQB's advanced and specialist certifications.

Your next step therefore depends on the direction you want your testing career to take. The wider range of ISTQB certifications includes routes into areas such as advanced test analysis, automation and AI testing.
